For me, science means truth. Without science, there is no factual basis for discussions and problem solving – every statement would be of equal value and no dialogue would ever come to a productive end. Although there will always be people who think their own opinions are more correct and more important than facts, there is at least a distinction between ‘facts’ and ‘alternative facts’ like those of Donald Trump, Viktor Orbán or Herbert Kickl. Anyone who denies science endangers democracy and discredits the educational system and faculties of their own country.
That is why it is important to protect science from political influence. Education, science and research must not be subject to party political goals, because politics must follow science, and not the other way around. The truth is not for sale. It is the foundation on which a functioning democracy is built.
