Last night, we had the great honor of meeting the creator of the cube, Ernő Rubik, at @mak_vienna. During the panel discussion, Rubik left the young, curious audience with a few simple but profound thoughts: it’s not about knowing exactly what the outcome will be. What matters is doing what you do as well as possible. „God is in the details,“ he said – a stark contrast to the German expression, where the devil is in the details. A subtle but powerful difference that changes everything. Starting from a simple question: How big is a ton Starting from a simple question: How big is a ton of CO2? This inconspicuous mass plays a significant role in the greenhouse effect by absorbing and radiating heat emitted by the Earth. A large portion of greenhouse gas emissions consists of . In 2021, the average emissions per capita in the EU were 7.8 tons of CO2 equivalents, with Austria exceeding this average at 8.7 tons. Now, picture this: Around 8 tons of CO2 squeezed into a cubic shape. Can you? . . . It’s a cube with side lengths of about 8 meters (!) – that’s the measure of a ton of CO2 as determined by Jeroen Dobbelaere, the sustainability officer of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). Yet, the concept often remains abstract, hence the creation of this cube to make it more tangible. It made its debut at the Vienna Ball of Sciences and will continue to be showcased during the 75th anniversary of the Vienna Municipal Utilities. Did we mention the role of the Vienna Municipal Utilities, aka the Wiener Stadtwerke? They play a crucial role in transforming Vienna into a carbon-neutral metropolis by 2040! On Friday, January 26, the first Science Communica On Friday, January 26, the first Science Communication lecture organized by SciBall took place at @oeaw.at in Vienna. The speaker was Marc Abrahams, the creator of the legendary Ig Nobel Prize, which honors scientific work that first makes you laugh and then makes you think. With a touch of humor, Abrahams offers a fresh perspective on everyday matters, exploring quirky studies like the mathematically best way to cut a ham sandwich or whether it’s better to be hit with an empty or full beer bottle. He delved into peculiar questions like detecting lies better with the right or left ear and the swimming speed difference in water versus syrup. During the lecture, Abrahams showcased live examples with @veronicakauphasler and Univ.-Prof. Matthias Karmasin, addressing why water spills when walking with a glass. In one study, he analyzed forces required to move sheep across various surfaces, aiming to enhance safety for both shepherds and sheep. He even presented a red bra, revealing its purpose as an emergency bra that can quickly transform into two protective respiratory face masks! The inventor, a doctor who treated Chernobyl disaster victims, designed it to mitigate the health consequences of inhaling radioactive material. Beyond sharing studies, Abrahams also provided specific insights into science communication during the lecture. At the lecture, attendees were warmly greeted by Univ.-Prof. I.R. Heinz Faßmann, the President of ÖAW, and Oliver Lehmann, the Chairman of the Ball Committee. Mag. Veronica Kaup-Hasler, the City Councillor for Arts and Science, extended cordial words. The starting point is the skepticism towards science, as recently documented in the Science Barometer of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The understandable response from universities and researchers is to engage more in outreach and communication. However, Abrahams — a globally recognized pioneer in contemporary science communication — goes beyond and asks: Why do we need science communication? „AI must only be a tool, and humans must respons „AI must only be a tool, and humans must responsibly verify whether the result is acceptable.“ Georg Gottlob’s statements underscore the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly through technologies like Machine Learning and Large Language Models such as ChatGPT. Despite these technologies existing for some time, a disruptive process is underway, allowing AI to permeate various facets of life. For those proficient in fundamental skills, AI tools offer significant time savings and enable innovative applications. However, Gottlob cautions against potential issues when employing AI as a black-box tool without reflection, especially for younger generations. Universities and the scientific community are undergoing a shift wherein AI can produce exams and even publications within minutes. Nonetheless, Gottlob emphasizes the indispensable nature of critical examination by competent individuals. AI should serve as support, not autonomously dictate decisions. The evolution in science implies a recalibration of scientists‘ work methods. While AI can provide assistance, the fundamentally educated human remains irreplaceable. Personal meetings and profound exchanges remain crucial, as they cannot be entirely substituted by AI. Georg Gottlob, an eminent European computer scientist currently affiliated with the University of Calabria and TU Wien, is renowned for his work in database theory, logic, and artificial intelligence. A recipient of prestigious awards such as the Wittgenstein Prize and ERC Advanced Grant, he holds notable positions including Fellow of the Royal Society and membership in ÖAW and Leopoldina. The two students, Olesia and Alisa, are facing a i The two students, Olesia and Alisa, are facing a impressive challenge: a black fabric, 30 meters long and 3.5 meters wide. A utopian world is unfolding on the huge fabric strip – bicycles, trees, windmills, and Hundertwasser’s waste incineration plant. The two artists themselves are miniature figures in front of this environmentally friendly vision. „Despite climate change, we want to focus on positive developments,“ explains Olesia, while Alisa emphasizes that cycling is not only healthy but also more environmentally friendly.   In just two weeks, they are supposed to bring their vision to life on the fabric. It’s a challenge that involves a lot of learning. „Doing it together is already a challenge, but also one from which we can learn,“ says Olesia. The black fabric is not only large but also wavy, making painting on it difficult. Alisa admits, „It’s really not easy to paint.“ However, the two rely on thorough preparation and a strategic approach to make the colors come alive.   Although they do not see themselves as artists intending to draw attention to climate change through their art, the project leaves an impression. Olesia connects the black fabric wall with her childhood in Crimea, where she cleaned a polluted river. Alisa emphasizes that art can contribute to educating and visually informing children about sustainability. Both are confident that climate change will influence their future works – the exact form of which remains to be seen. The final drawing will be displayed at the ball disco on January 27th. Early in her physics studies, Wade noticed a glaring imbalance with 80% of her peers being male, a predominantly white British student body, and a prevalence of affluent backgrounds. Driven by the belief that diverse teams lead to more impactful breakthroughs, Wade has been a proactive force for change. Her initiatives began in schools and expanded to encompass universities and research councils. Notably, she has crafted over 2,000 Wikipedia biographies spotlighting scientists from historically marginalized groups. Wade perceives her role as a scientist as a privilege, using it to uplift underrepresented researchers.
