One of our last year’s guests of honor, Ursula S One of our last year’s guests of honor, Ursula Soritsch-Renier, is someone you need to know about. She’s the kind of person who hears, „Why not just do it?”. And then she does. After stints at heavyweight companies like Philips, Sulzer, Novartis, and Nokia, where she likely reshaped more technology than most will ever understand, she has been at the helm since 2021 as Chief Digital and Information Officer at Saint-Gobain, a 350-year-old French industrial giant that designs, manufactures, and distributes innovative solutions for the construction, mobility, and industrial markets worldwide. But Ursula Soritsch-Renier’s career isn’t just about technology, it’s about transformation. At Saint-Gobain, she’s steering the company toward a sustainable future, aligning its operations with a set of clear CSR pillars to minimize ecological, social, and societal impact. The company’s roadmap is ambitious: ethical codes, green solutions, and spaces designed for well-being. And Ursula Soritsch-Renier understands what’s at stake. She has spent her career navigating male-dominated environments and is now committed to paving the way for the next generation of female tech leaders. When we asked @barbara.zeman – a historian, jour When we asked @barbara.zeman – a historian, journalist, novelist, book club founder, podcaster, and occasional Bachmann Prize nominee born in Burgenland in 1981 – to contribute to our ball message, we didn’t quite get what we expected. Instead of the thousand words we had envisioned, she sent us exactly one sentence: „completely boring world without science.” That’s it. Asking for further elaboration felt unnecessary – perhaps even missing the point. Or maybe her words are simply a stark warning of the „completely boring world” that awaits if we fail to value science. Zeman, who lives in Vienna (evident from her fondness for the word ,bisserl‘), seems perfectly at ease with brevity. Perhaps it’s a holdover from her journalistic past, where precision is key, or her historian’s instinct to find meaning in the subtext. Her literary journey began with ‚Immerjahn‘, her 2019 debut novel – a quirky, melancholic work unsure whether to take itself seriously. Since then, she’s contributed to numerous anthologies, likely all as sharp and concise as her ball message. Then came the pandemic. While some baked bread or mastered origami, Zeman turned to the intellectual pastime of founding a book club – with actor Robert Stadlober, no less. During this time, she also began collaborating with author Clemens J. Setz, resulting in the ‚First Austrian Nonfiction Prize‘ podcast – a creative project that defies categorization, much like its creators. Now, Zeman’s latest novel, ‚Beteigeuze‘, has earned her a spot on the shortlist for the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize and a place on ‚Die Zeit‘s‘ list of the year’s 100 best books. Her modest response to all this success? Likely a casual shrug and a simple ‚Passt schon.‘ And what’s left? Vienna dances. It always has – in ballrooms, spi Vienna dances. It always has – in ballrooms, spinning to the rhythm of the waltz, a city full of grace and movement. But in 2025, the city will dance even more. Why? Because it’s all about Johann Strauss, the Waltz King, celebrating 200 years of him. And here’s the thing about a good dance: it needs a host. Someone who doesn’t just press play on the music, but creates a space where people connect. That’s Karl Regensburger. For nearly 40 years, he’s been at the heart of @impulstanz_festival , not just running a festival he founded with dancer Ismael Ivo, but building a world where dance is alive, raw, and totally unexpected. And next year? It’s Johann Strauss meets the present. Think Strauss, but reimagined – bold, modern, maybe even a little chaotic. French choreographers, Belgian visionaries, orchestras, and ballerinas breaking all the rules. We asked Karl Regensburger for a statement as a Ball Ambassador of SciBall25. He spoke of Anna Tsing’s „The Mushroom at the End of the World“, a book exploring how resilience and creativity flourish in unexpected places. Tsing talks about mushroom foraging as a kind of dance – wandering, searching, finding, and being fully present in the moment. (link in bio!) That’s exactly what Karl Regensburger and his team do with dance. They gather stories, talents, and movements from all over the world and turn them into something we can all share. In his own words: „This life and survival would be inconceivable without science – without connected, well-funded, respected, and persistent research, its implementation and communication – as certain as landing after a Grand Jeté.“ That, Regensburger says, is what dance is about too. Not every mushroom hunter is a scientist, and not every dancer is a philosopher. But both – science and dance – require curiosity, collaboration, and the ability to embrace life in all its complexity. They connect us, move us, and give us something worth celebrating at SciBall25. Sarah Rossmann, Chairwoman of the Austrian Student Sarah Rossmann, Chairwoman of the Austrian Student Union (@bundesoeh), recently made it clear what the SciBall truly means to her – and it’s more than just a festive evening. For her, the ball is a strong statement in support of scientific freedom, diversity, and everything that science truly stands for: openness and curiosity. Especially on an evening when we celebrate science, it’s more important than ever to stand up to the forces that threaten it. Her message is clear, direct, and to the point: „Universities are places for free thinking, critical exchange, and social responsibility – and certainly not for exclusion or hate.“ So, the Ball of Sciences is meant to do more than just get us dancing – it’s a reminder of how crucial it is for research and education to remain independent and diverse. As a ball ambassador and highly successful podcaster (alongside Florian Klenk from Falter), he addresses the often complicated relationship between science and the public: „Scientists need to relearn how to inspire both the public and policymakers. But after studying microbiology and immunobiology, she realized that the most pressing questions are not purely biological. Why do people distrust science? How do societal structures perpetuate inequalities in scientific fields? Shifting to the philosophy of science, she arrived at a profound realization: science is not neutral. It is intertwined with politics, history, and social dynamics – and often contributes to the very inequalities it seeks to overcome. Feminist critiques of science reveal how women, queer individuals, and BiPOCs continue to face systematic disadvantages. Today, Veigl advocates for a science that reflects on its biases, takes responsibility, and demands justice. Last night, we had the great honor of meeting the creator of the cube, Ernő Rubik, at @mak_vienna. During the panel discussion, Rubik left the young, curious audience with a few simple but profound thoughts: it’s not about knowing exactly what the outcome will be. What matters is doing what you do as well as possible. „God is in the details,“ he said – a stark contrast to the German expression, where the devil is in the details. A subtle but powerful difference that changes everything. Starting from a simple question: How big is a ton Starting from a simple question: How big is a ton of CO2? This inconspicuous mass plays a significant role in the greenhouse effect by absorbing and radiating heat emitted by the Earth. A large portion of greenhouse gas emissions consists of . In 2021, the average emissions per capita in the EU were 7.8 tons of CO2 equivalents, with Austria exceeding this average at 8.7 tons. Now, picture this: Around 8 tons of CO2 squeezed into a cubic shape. Can you? . . . It’s a cube with side lengths of about 8 meters (!) – that’s the measure of a ton of CO2 as determined by Jeroen Dobbelaere, the sustainability officer of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). Yet, the concept often remains abstract, hence the creation of this cube to make it more tangible. It made its debut at the Vienna Ball of Sciences and will continue to be showcased during the 75th anniversary of the Vienna Municipal Utilities. Did we mention the role of the Vienna Municipal Utilities, aka the Wiener Stadtwerke? They play a crucial role in transforming Vienna into a carbon-neutral metropolis by 2040! On Friday, January 26, the first Science Communica On Friday, January 26, the first Science Communication lecture organized by SciBall took place at @oeaw.at in Vienna. The speaker was Marc Abrahams, the creator of the legendary Ig Nobel Prize, which honors scientific work that first makes you laugh and then makes you think. With a touch of humor, Abrahams offers a fresh perspective on everyday matters, exploring quirky studies like the mathematically best way to cut a ham sandwich or whether it’s better to be hit with an empty or full beer bottle. He delved into peculiar questions like detecting lies better with the right or left ear and the swimming speed difference in water versus syrup. During the lecture, Abrahams showcased live examples with @veronicakauphasler and Univ.-Prof. Matthias Karmasin, addressing why water spills when walking with a glass. In one study, he analyzed forces required to move sheep across various surfaces, aiming to enhance safety for both shepherds and sheep. He even presented a red bra, revealing its purpose as an emergency bra that can quickly transform into two protective respiratory face masks! The inventor, a doctor who treated Chernobyl disaster victims, designed it to mitigate the health consequences of inhaling radioactive material. Beyond sharing studies, Abrahams also provided specific insights into science communication during the lecture. At the lecture, attendees were warmly greeted by Univ.-Prof. I.R. Heinz Faßmann, the President of ÖAW, and Oliver Lehmann, the Chairman of the Ball Committee. Mag. Veronica Kaup-Hasler, the City Councillor for Arts and Science, extended cordial words.
